How many driving lessons needed to pass driving test?

Whether you’ve just started learning to drive or you’ve been learning for a while, it’s natural to question How many driving lessons needed to pass driving test? it’ll take to pass your driving test?

While there’s no minimum number of lessons required to take your test, it can be useful to have an idea of how many you might need so you can budget for your lessons and plan for the future. The DVSA have quoted an averages driving lessons needed is between 40 to 50 hours of lessons with a qualified instructor as well as 20 extra hours of practice with a family member or friend.

However everyone learns at different pace therefore some people will be ready before this average number of driving lessons and others will require more time. This can depend on a number of factors:

1. Finding the right driving instructor

Each qualified ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) must undergo a process involving 3 tests and even once these are passed, a driving instructor must attend continual check tests to ensure they are teaching learners to a high standard. Even taking this into account, the standard at which driving instructors teach however, varies considerably.

The learner drivers are usually nervous on their first driving lesson. The instructor should make them feel at ease and comfortable. If for whatever reason, the instructor makes you feel uneasy, look for another. If during this assessment lesson you do not understand what the instructor is trying to explain, make it clear that you do not understand. The instructor should in theory use a different technique to explain after that if you still unable to understand their teaching techniques then find another driving instructor.

2. How many driving lessons should you take each week?

Continuity of driving lessons is really important. The more often you’re behind the wheel the better. You’re also likely to progress more quickly if you have two hour lessons each time rather than an hour’s driving lesson.
