Car safety check questions & answers

Some questions you will have to answer and show to the examiner and others you can just answer the question

 

 

Question 1: Headlight & Tail light?

Tell me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working ?

 

Answer 1:

Turn on Ignition switch and Show symbol on dashboard Also see reflection and then walk around vehicle if need too.

 

Question 2: Direction Indicator? 

Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working?

 

 

Answer 2:

Applying the indicators or hazard warning switch and check functioning of all indicators by walk around the vehicle.

 

 

Question 3: Brake light? 

Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car.

Answer 3:

Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help

Question 4: Main beam light?

Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car

Answer 4:

Ignition on and switch on dipped head lights show main beam Blue warning light on dashboard, use when visibility is less the 100 meter.

 

Question 5: Fog light?

Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them

 

Answer 5:

Ignition on and turn on fog light switch. Show yellow warning light on dashboard. Use when visibility is less than 100 meter.

Question 6: Horn

Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

Question 7: on parking brake (handbrake)

Tell me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle

Answer 7:

Tell when applying handbrake it should secures itself, and it is not too high up

 

 

Question 8: on brake?

Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey

 

Answer 8: brake

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

 

Question 9: on anti lock braking system (ABS) ?

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system

Answer 9:

ABS warning light should show on dash board if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system

 

Question 10: on power assisted steering?

Tell how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey

Answer 10: 

If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly.

 

 

Question 11: on head restraint? 

Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash

Answer 11:

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears.

 

Question 12: on demister control ? 

Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens

Answer 12:

Show demister switch for back window and front window and use when need to clear the window.

 

Question 13: Check tyre pressure?

Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Answer 13:

Information in car hand book / Manual, and use reliable pressure gauge, check and when tyres are cold, include spare tyre

Question 14: Tyre tread and conditions?

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Answer 14:

No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

 

Question 15: Windscreen washer & wipers?

Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers

Answer 15:

Operate control to wash and wipe windscreen (turn on ignition)

 

Question 16: Engine oil?

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

Answer 16:

Identify dipstick / oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the high / low markers.

 

Question 17: Engine coolant?

Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level

Answer 17:

Identify high / low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to correct level

 

Question 18: Brake fluid?

Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Question 19: Windscreen washer reservoir?

Open bonnet and Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level

Answer 19:

Identify reservoir and it should be filled to the top.
