Driving instructors standards check and part 3 test preparation

o.

Driving instructor standards check and part 3 test preparation

Driving Instructors standards check and part 3 test will last a duration of approximately 45 minutes, with a 2 and half-minute briefing at the start of the test and a 2 and half-minute de-briefing at the end of the test. Just like your normal driving lessons, if it goes over by 5 – 10 minutes, it is acceptable.

Step 1

Meeting your pupil

When picking up your pupil from their home, discuss and agree on the following points:

  • The lesson (topic) you will be doing
  • The goals for the lesson
  • Q’s & A’s to understand pupil’s knowledge of the lesson
  • The help that they may need from you
  • How both of you will be sharing the risks and responsibilities

Step 2

When the examiner gets into the car.

When the examiner gets in the back of the car they are joining a lesson already started.

  • Therefore, no need to discuss everything you did earlier when you started the lesson from pupil’s home,
  • Do recap bullet points agreed at pupil’s home for the examiner’s record, but do keep it brief about 2-3 minutes long

Step 3

If you agreed to talk through the lesson or give prompting help

If you agreed to talk through or give prompting help to the pupil, then do remember to pass on the responsibilities to the pupil, when you can see they start doing it more by themselves, for learning to take place

Step 4

Pupil agrees to try it out by themselves

If the pupil agrees at the start of the lesson, that they wish to try it themselves, and when you see they can do things without any problems, make the lesson more challenging e.g., busy road, or different lesson for learning to take place.

Step 5

The pupil makes a fault on the same topic

If the pupil makes a fault on the same topic then:

  • Identify the fault
  • Analyse why the fault happened?
  • First always ask why pupil think the fault happened before you give your thought
  • Talk about what are the risks and dangers of the fault?
  • Agree on an action plan to correct the fault.
  • Repeat correcting the fault until pupil understood and learning takes place

Step 6

The pupil makes the fault on different topic

If a pupil makes a fault on a different topic than the one you agreed to do at the start of the lesson, then: –

  • Identify the fault
  • Analyse why the fault happened?
  • First ask the pupil for their thoughts
  • Discuss what are the risks and dangers of the fault?
  • Agree on an action plan to correct the fault,
  • If needed, change the lesson plan and the route to help rectify the fault for learning to take place

Step 7

Debrief at the end of the test

Remember to do a debrief and get the pupil’s input at the end of the test:

  • How did the lesson go
  • What goals they archived
  • What they can improve next lesson
  • Set goals for the next lesson
